Ohio CAT and FAO Bring COSI On Wheels to Harrison East Elementary

Through the partnership of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) and Ohio CAT, students of Harrison East Elementary welcomed COSI On Wheels into their school for hands-on science exploration through the It’s Simply Chemistry program.
“The staff and students of
Harrison East Elementary are very grateful to have been given the opportunity
to experience chemistry through COSI’s hands-on approach to science. Through the kindness and monetary support of
companies such as Ohio CAT and the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, we were
able to bring COSI to our school,” said Principal Sandra Leggett. “As the
administrator of a building of nearly 600 students, I witnessed the joy of
learning exhibited by our students! This
hands-on experience kindled a new interest in some while solidifying the love
of learning in others. Thanks again to
Ohio CAT and the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio!”

COSI On
Wheels,
a traveling outreach program of Columbus’s Center of Science and Industry (COSI),
engages students in a dynamic opening assembly and interactive science
activities which align with the Ohio Academic Content Standards and complement the
National Science Education Standards. Harrison East Elementary students turned
into budding chemists, joining a chemistry detective to solve mysteries by
identifying acids and bases, determining unknown substances, and decoding an
invisible message. Students were also able to create endothermic and exothermic
reactions and make a container of super-slime to take home as well as a variety
of other activities that may have sparked interest in a scientific career. COSI developed It’s Simply Chemistry, one
of six traveling science programs,
through its supporting sponsor Ashland Inc.
“The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is
fortunate to have partners who realize educational opportunity is vital to students’
educational and life success,” said Cara Dingus Brook, FAO President and CEO. “By
investing in FAO, Ohio CAT is investing in the future of Appalachian Ohio and
its students by bringing programs like COSI
On Wheels directly into our region.”
