The economic value of education is without question. Studies clearly document increased levels of education directly associate with a substantially reduced risk of poverty. Yet in Appalachian Ohio, only one-third of adults over age 25 have any formal education beyond high school, as compared to approximately one-half of adults across the rest of the state.

Of those who do attend post-secondary institutions, the Appalachian Ohio student population has far more first-generation students and a higher drop-out percentage than non-Appalachian peers. Fifty-one percent of our students are first-generation college students versus 40% of their non-Appalachian counterparts.

In a 2008 survey, lack of finances followed by lack of financial aid information was shown to be students’ largest barriers to post-secondary pursuits. FAO’s experience confirms this research – our volunteer Scholarship Committee often struggles to address the tremendous need presented in scholarship requests, as even a small scholarship can make the difference in a student’s decision to continue his or her education after high school.

The Foundation is honored to support 23 donor-established scholarship funds in both supporting the continued educational pursuits of the region’s students and honoring the legacy and story behind each fund. FAO releases scholarship opportunities each year on March 1st.
